Our offices are located in the heart of historic Alexandria, Virginia, just 8 blocks from the Potomac River. So it was logical for us to get involved in the City’s tourism and convention marketing efforts. Since 1995, we’ve worked with the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association in multiple media, for all types of branding, awareness and direct response campaigns in print and online. Our leisure (destination), tourist pre-market, tourist in-market and meeting/event campaigns have been extremely effective.
For example, in May 2010, Strategic Marketing & Research executed a Return on Investment study of Alexandria’s destination advertising campaign. As the result of a $300,000 media buy, for one year prior, the research indicated:
Alexandria was designated as the most popular destination in the region, other than D.C.
88,000 additional trips to Alexandria were generated as a result of the advertising. With an average trip spending of $454 per trip, this translated into $40 million in additional visitor spending.
Among the 88,000 trips, 57% used paid accommodations and stayed an average of 1.2 nights, which translated into 60,350 additional hotel room nights sold (or 5% of all room nights sold in Alexandria in the previous year). Furthermore, each $1 in marketing/media also generated $133 in increased spending in Alexandria, plus $1.67 in room taxes, for a total of $501,000, for the City.
2012 MARKETING UPDATE: Visitor spending increased 8.1 percent in 2011, to total $711 million, generating Alexandria City tax revenue of $23.1 million. In five years, visitor spending increased 22 percent — dramatically outpacing increases for Virginia and Northern Virginia, both at 9 percent.
